ErP 2015: the European eco-design directive

In 2009, Europe issued the ErP Directive to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment, a directive that has become more stringent with ErP 2015. Here is what it is about and what requirements it contains.

ErP, Energy Related Products, is a directive issued by the European Union following the Kyoto Protocol and Directive 2009/125/EC. It sets out guidelines for the construction of motors, fans and air treatment units, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions both during the production of the devices and during their daily use.

Because the parameters introduced by the legislation require a radical change in the production of air treatment units, the European Union has chosen to introduce this change gradually through the introduction of progressively more stringent directives. One of these is called ErP 2015. Let’s discover it together.

The ErP 2015 requirements

ErP 2015 represents the second phase of implementation of Directive 2009/125/EC on energy conservation.

Entering into force on 01 January 2015, this directive obliges motor manufacturers to ensure an energy class of IE3 for 7.5 kW motors or IE2 for 5.5 kW motors and 7.5 kW motors equipped with frequency converters.

Furthermore, ErP 2015 obliges fan manufacturers to produce devices with a minimum efficiency of stage 2.

The products that must comply with it

The ErP 2015 regulation applies to axial, centrifugal, cross-flow or mixed-flow fans with an output of between 125K and 500 kW.

ATEX fans, fans for kitchen extractor fans, fans for extracting aggressive agents and fans working at high temperatures do not have to comply with ErP 2015.

CMC Ventilation's commitment to comply with ErP 2015

Our technical team took note of the ErP 2015 directive and immediately took action to produce fans and air handling units that complied with its requirements. The attention we pay to the choice of environmentally friendly materials and the search for new energy-saving solutions have, however, enabled us to comply ahead of time with the requirements of the ErP 2020 standard , which provides even stricter rules for reducing the environmental impact of our products.
